The Schöckl must defeat every G-class. Mercedes-Benz uses the 1,445-meter-high local mountain in Graz, Austria, as a test track. The 5.6-kilometer route includes gradients of up to 60 percent and side slopes of up to 40 percent. A good 2,000 grueling kilometers on this highly demanding course must survive a "G" in the development phase. The new G-Class masters the track with noticeably more control and comfort.
The overriding goal of the development was to make the new G-Class even more efficient in the field. The G thus remains a true G - thanks in part to its standard ladder frame, the three 100-percent differential locks and the LOW RANGE terrain reduction. Its chassis was developed in cooperation between Mercedes-Benz G GmbH and Mercedes-AMG GmbH. The result is an independent suspension with double wishbone front axle in combination with a rigid rear axle. In the development, it was up to the engineers to fight for every millimeter, because off-road capability means not least also maximum ground clearance. Contributing crucially to the higher-level axle with independent suspension, which additionally increases the rigidity of the body via a strut brace.
The components of the double wishbone front axle are attached directly to the ladder frame without a subframe. The connection points on the frame of the lower arm in the Z-direction are positioned as far up as possible. This arrangement guarantees good driveability beyond the asphalt. Especially for the G-Class, the new front axle construction is designed so robust that the off-road performance and capabilities of the predecessor are maintained and even partially surpassed. The new rigid rear axle is guided with four trailing arms on each side and a Panhard rod. The off-road vehicle remains more stable in the lane, away from paved roads it is light-footed and effortless on the road.
Outstanding driving characteristics and driving safety through high control for the driver can only be experienced. But the following values show impressively that every little detail has been checked to improve the off-road characteristics and optimized if possible.
Great ground clearance and long suspension travel are still the basis for the further improved off-road characteristics of the G-Class. The values speak for themselves:

The new "G-Mode" clears ways where there are none
One of the prerequisites for improved off-road driving characteristics is the new "G-Mode". Regardless of the selected driving program, the G-Class changes to "G-Mode" as soon as one of the three differential locks is activated or the LOW RANGE gear reduction is engaged. This off-road mode adapts the suspension damping and the steering, as well as the accelerator characteristic, avoids unnecessary circuits and ensures maximum off-road capability. Quite discretely in the instrument cluster then lights up a small "G" icon. Strong G hits the G so easily away, the driver must not hold the steering wheel even in extreme terrain convulsively to maneuver sovereign.
New automatic transmission on board
For power transmission, the 9G-TRONIC converter automatic transmission (NAG3) was specially adapted to the requirements of the off-road icon. Due to the independent software application, the developers were able to shorten the switching and reaction times of the 9-speed gearbox. The wide spread of the transmission makes driving at low speed not only more comfortable and quieter, but also contributes to the reduction of fuel consumption. Flanged directly to the 9G-TRONIC is the new transfer case. It is tuned so that the drive torque reaches 40 percent on the front axle and 60 percent on the rear axle. The permanent four-wheel drive always ensures maximum traction.
The gear ratio can be engaged in gearbox mode "N" via the LOW RANGE switch up to a speed of 40 km / h. The transmission ratio of the transfer case is then changed from 1.00 in the HIGH RANGE to 2.93. From LOW RANGE to HIGH RANGE, conversion to 70 km / h is possible. The reduction ratio of the transfer case is 2.93 and thus significantly shorter than the previous model (2.1), which makes itself felt especially when starting on an extreme slope.

Thanks to the optional 360 ° camera, reversing camera and three other cameras, all-round bird's eye view is possible. Thus, obstacles that are below the window line or in front of the vehicle, such as a dome, do not remain hidden. The information can be clearly displayed in different selectable views in full HD on the display of the multimedia system. Dynamic guides show the route and the width of the G-Class. The off-road screen, which was specially developed for the G-Class, also provides information such as altitude, incline, inclination, compass, steering angle and activated differential locks.
In addition, all-terrain tires in 18-inch form are optionally available for particularly demanding applications.
