With the new Mercedes-AMG G 63 (combined fuel consumption: 13.2 l / 100 km, combined CO2 emissions: 299 g / km), the G-Class from Mercedes-AMG is experiencing the biggest change in its history - and remains its proven virtues faithful. The G 63 underpins its unique position among performance all-terrain vehicles with the powerful drive, the newly developed AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, the AMG-specific driving programs and the new interior with optional widescreen cockpit. The basis for the AMG typical driving performance on and off paved roads is the 585 hp 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, the rear-wheel-drive four-wheel drive (40:60) with three differential locks, the extremely fast-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission , the double wishbone independent front suspension and the adaptive damping. The reinterpretation of the unmistakable design sets distinctive accents with the AMG-specific radiator cowling, the wheel arch extensions, the striking side pipes of the exhaust system and the up to 22-inch wheels.

The cow catcher is not available in Europe.
The AMG 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine now also replaces the previous 5.5-liter V8 biturbo engine in the G 63. It delivers 585 hp and provides a maximum torque of 850 Nm. It is available over a wide rev range from 2,500 to 3,500 rpm, giving the feeling of superior sovereignty. The sprint from a standstill to 100 km / h is done in 4.5 seconds. Dynamic propulsion reaches up to the limited top speed of 220 km / h, with AMG Driver's Package up to 240 km / h.
For greater efficiency, Mercedes-AMG has equipped the V8 engine in the G 63 with the cylinder deactivation AMG Cylinder Management. In the partial load range, cylinders two, three, five and eight are deactivated, which significantly reduces fuel consumption. The combined fuel consumption is 13.2 l / 100 km, the combined CO2 emissions are 299 g / km.
The cylinder deactivation is available in the wide speed range from 1,000 to 3,250 rpm if the driver has selected the "Comfort" transmission travel program. The AMG main menu in the instrument cluster informs the driver whether the cylinder deactivation is active and whether the engine is currently running in the partial or full load range. The transition from four to eight-cylinder operation is torque-neutral, so that passengers feel no loss of comfort.
The G 63 uses the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission (NAG3 Sport). Due to the independent software application very short switching times could be realized. The multiple downshifting enables fast intermediate sprints, while the intermediate throttle function in the driving modes "Sport" and "Sport Plus" makes the driving experience even more emotional. In addition, defined ignition interventions ensure even faster gear changes.
The wide girth spread allows either a very sporty or very comfortable and efficient driving experience. All driving programs start in first gear to ensure a dynamic sprint from a standstill. New is the position of the DIRECT SELECT selector lever as a steering column lever near the steering wheel.

You can select the "Manual" mode with your own button. The switching behavior depends on the selected driving program, and the gear changes can now be performed via the Schaltpaddles on the steering wheel. In addition, the transmission remains in the selected gear and does not automatically turn up when the engine speed reaches the limiter.
The standard all-wheel drive AMG Performance 4MATIC is characterized by the rear-emphasized torque distribution of 40 percent to the front axle to 60 percent to the rear axle. This design provides increased agility on the road and improved traction during acceleration. In the predecessor, the distribution was neutral 50:50.
For tough off-road use, the standard off-road reduction has been further developed. It helps the G 63 master even more demanding off-road passages. The reduction ratio of the transfer case is now 2.93, which is significantly shorter than the previous model (2.1). This facilitates in particular the approach to extreme slopes, because the torques are significantly increased at the drive wheels. The terrain reduction can be activated via the LOW RANGE switch up to a speed of 40 km / h. The transmission ratio of the transfer case is then changed from 1.00 in the HIGH RANGE to 2.93. From LOW RANGE to HIGH RANGE, conversion to 70 km / h is possible.
The new, intelligent multi-plate clutch behaves like an automatically controlled limited slip differential. It ensures that the new G 63 remains manoeuvrable in the terrain for longer. Advantage: The driver has more leeway before he has to manually engage the differential locks. If the driver activates the switch for the lock in the center differential, the multi-plate clutch switches over to a one-hundred percent blocking effect. The locks on the front and rear differential are designed as differential locks with dog clutch and 100 percent locking effect. All locks can be engaged individually during the journey in both the LOW RANGE and the HIGH RANGE - first center, then rear axle and finally front axle differential. The differential locks now react even faster at the touch of a button because they are electromechanical and fully networked. Which lock is currently working is indicated by the LED and in the central driver display.
The new G 63 is even more powerful off-road and more dynamic and comfortable on the road than its predecessor. To the agile driving feeling, the completely redesigned suspension by Mercedes-AMG with coil springs makes a significant contribution. For the first time, there is an independent suspension on the front axle with double wishbones; on the rear axle is a rigid axle with five-link suspension used.
The components of the double wishbone front axle are attached directly to the ladder frame without a subframe. The attachment points of the lower arm are as far as possible positioned above. This arrangement guarantees good drivability on the road and in the field. A strut brace called a strut bridge connects the front strut domes, increasing the torsional rigidity of the ladder frame.
At the rear, the new axle is guided by four trailing links on each side and a panhard bar. This makes normal road driving even more comfortable. Off-road, the 82/142 millimeter fore / aft suspension travel at the rear and ground clearance of 241 millimeters to the rear axle drive ensure safety even in extreme situations. To reduce the sway, the G 63 has additional anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles.
The AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive damping is standard equipment. This fully automated, electronically controlled system continuously adjusts the damping on each wheel to the current need. This improves driving safety and ride comfort. The tuning of the damping is regulated individually for each wheel and depends on the driving style, the road condition and the selected landing gear stages. So you can always choose the optimal operating point based on a lot of information such as acceleration or driving speed.
Via a switch in the center console, the driver has the choice between the different damper maps "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport +" and can thus influence the driving impression individually - from highly comfortable to sporty taut.
For the first time in the history of the Mercedes-AMG G-Class, driving characteristics can be personalized with just a tap, with five on-road driving programs and three off-road driving programs.

With the five DYNAMIC SELECT on-road programs "Smoothness", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport +" and "Individual", the differentiation ranges from efficient and comfortable to very sporty. Important parameters such as the response of engine, transmission, suspension and steering are modified. Regardless of the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programs, the driver can directly switch to manual mode via the "M" button to switch exclusively via the steering wheel shift paddles. Likewise, the levels of adaptive damping can be selected separately if required.
For off-road use, the three off-road programs "Sand", "Trail" and "Rock" are available. They are called up via the button in the center console for activation of the central differential lock and then selected via the DYNAMIC SELECT rocker. "Trail" provides maximum performance on soft, muddy or slippery surfaces. "Sand" changes the parameters with sporty dynamics for the best possible grip and maneuverability on sandy slopes or in desert dunes. "Rock" is the program for extremely demanding, rocky terrain with high axle crossings and frequent lifting of one or more wheels.
All driving programs On and Off Road are visualized both in the instrument cluster and in the central media display. Deselecting all locks will return the setting to the on-road driving modes.
Another development goal was to reduce the weight of the body. Using a digital prototype, designers simulated the life of individual parts and assemblies to analyze where lighter materials could be used without compromising durability, durability and quality.
The result is a new material mix: the body is made of different types of steel. Mudguards, bonnet and doors are made of aluminum. To retain the G-type door hinges and handles, the developers adapted them to the new aluminum construction. The A and B columns are made of high strength steel because of their load-bearing function.
Thanks to the intelligent design, the torsional stiffness of the frame, body and body support could be increased by about 55 percent from 6,537 to 10,162 Nm / degree. This is the best basis for highest driving precision. The comfort also benefits: In the interior significantly fewer vibrations and noises can be felt.
The roof is no longer spot-welded, but connected to the rest of the body by laser welding - resulting in better surface quality and greater body strength. The flange areas have been retained but optimized for the new welding process. For the first time all fixed washers are glued into the body. This not only increases the torsional stiffness of the body but also makes the window frames more resistant to corrosion.
The further development of the doors once again focused on off-road mobility. Side and rear door are lined inside with a protective film, so that even when driving through water no water can penetrate. The surfaces of the frame, vehicle floor and bodywork are treated to withstand even the most adverse conditions - whether water, snow, salt or sand.
Distinctive design features give the new AMG G 63 its unique appearance: the angular silhouette, the overlying bonnet, the outboard door hinges, the round headlights, the attached turn signals, the sturdy door handles, the sturdy protective strips with inserts in glossy black and silver AMG emblem as well the exposed spare wheel on the rear door with stainless steel cover and three-dimensional Mercedes star.
The face of the G 63 is dominated by the AMG-specific radiator cowling as well as the AMG's own bumper with large side air intakes and trim parts in iridium silver matt. The headlights, turn signals and taillights are fitted as standard with LED high-performance technology. This lighting consumes less energy and is very durable.

Optional MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are available. They illuminate the lane with 84 individually controlled high-performance LEDs automatically and with an exact light distribution, but without dazzling other recognized road users. Thanks to the individual control, the light distribution of the right and left headlamps can be adapted independently of each other and with high dynamics to the traffic situation. This increases safety for all road users. Among other things, with the extended foglamp function, MULTIBEAM LED technology makes it possible to illuminate the headlamp on the driver's side more actively while at the same time suppressing the increase of the light cone. As a result, the outer half of the road is illuminated brighter and reduces the glare of the driver by the light reflected by the fog.
The Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus also benefits from the power of the MULTIBEAM LED technology. The large number of pixels thus achieves unprecedented precision and dynamics of the dark areas in the light distribution in the split-beam mode and increases the service life of the high beam. Once switched on, the system always provides the best possible lighting range.
Characteristic of the G 63 are also the wheel arch extensions front and rear, which provide space for larger and wider wheels. Standard running boards, separate trim on the front and rear bumpers and the standard metallic paint finish complete the exclusive exterior. Further distinguishing features are the "V8 BITURBO" lettering on the front fenders and the Mercedes-AMG G 63 nameplate on the rear door. Red brake calipers, perforated brake discs and 22-inch rims available for the first time complete the exterior design.
The G 63 is particularly classy with the optional AMG Night package. Front and rear lights, the indicator lenses, the rear window and the rear side windows are tinted black here. The obsidian black livery of the exterior mirror housings, the spare wheel ring and the decorative elements in the front and rear bumpers together with the black painted underrun protection emphasizes the confident appearance, which is accompanied by matt black wheels in the 21 or 22 inch format.
The new G 63 has been given a fundamentally redesigned, modern interior that deliberately picks up elements of the exterior. This reflects the shape of the round headlights in the side vents and the design of the turn signals in the tweeters on the instrument panel. Also typical of the G 63 are the grab handle in front of the front passenger or the chrome-plated, centrally placed switches for the three differential locks. The completely redesigned instrument panel contains standard analogue tubes as round instruments. Optionally, the fully digital widescreen cockpit with virtual instruments in direct field of vision of the driver and the central display above the center console is used. Optically, the two 12.3-inch displays merge under one common cover glass to form one unit. The driver can choose from three different views - "Classic", "Sporty" and "Progressive" - and access the desired information individually.
The ride comfort can be further increased on request with the Active Multicontour Seat Package. In addition to the special multicontour seats, it includes various massage functions, seat air conditioning as well as a quick seat heating. In addition, this variant offers an electrically adjustable lumbar support for driver and front passenger. In the lateral areas of the seat supports and backrests of the active multi-contour seats, air chambers are integrated, which are filled or emptied depending on driving dynamics to better support the driver and passenger in their seating positions and to provide more lateral support when cornering.
New AMG performance steering wheel as standard
Extremely sporty design, a handy shape with a strongly contoured wreath and intuitive operation characterize the new, standard AMG performance steering wheel in nappa leather. It is flattened at the bottom and perforated in the grip area. The steering wheel shift paddles are galvanized. With the integrated touch control buttons, the functions of the instrument cluster (left) and the multimedia system (right) can be operated intuitively by horizontal and vertical wiping movements of the finger. As in the S-Class, the Active Distance Assistant DISTRONIC and the TEMPOMAT are set in the control panels on the left. The control panels on the right contain the activation of the voice control, the telephone and the adjustment of volume, track selection and other functions of the multimedia system.
Typical AMG V8 exhaust sound
The double-flow exhaust system opens into side pipes under the rear doors. From the twin tailpipes in high-gloss chrome sounds the AMG-typical V8 sound. The standard exhaust flap can be switched by the button in the center console or depending on the selected driving program in two stages and so the sound individually choose sometimes sporty, even more subtle.
The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 is also available as an exclusive special model "Edition 1" from the market launch: The combination of the equipment details makes the special model the spearhead of the range. Body colors include magnetite black, obsidian black, iridium silver, moja silver, selenite gray, designo graphite metallic, designo platinum black, designo mystic white bright, designo platinum magno and designo night black magno. As a subtle contrast, the sports stripes on the sides of the car are made of matt graphite gray. The rearview mirror housing adorns a red stripe. The AMG Night package with a high gloss black finish enhances the powerful impression. The matt black 22-inch forged wheels in Kreuzspeichendesign have red painted rim flanges. The red accents continue in the interior: they can be found on numerous equipment elements, such as red contrasting stitching on the instrument panel, center console, door panels and rear seats. The sports seats in front in nappa leather black / red pepper also show the eye-catching color. The sport seats are available as standard with dynamic diamond quilting and red contrasting stitching. The carbon trim features elements in red pepper, and the bottom-flattened performance steering wheel in microfibre DINAMICA is further enhanced by red contrasting stitching and a red twelve o'clock mark.
The new Mercedes-AMG G 63 celebrates its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on March 6, 2018, the release will take place on March 18, 2018, the launch will start in June 2018.
